UI↓
Spotlight is a consumer-to-consumer digital content platform built on Bitcoin's Lightning Network.
Information about Bitcoin flows in and disappears in huge volumes every day. I think places like Twitter, Discord and Telegram are at the center precisely because this information has such a short shelf life.
That's why Spotlight aims to be a place where even small pieces of information can be kept as writing.
I designed the UI so that posting feels light, yet everything accumulates properly.
The layout is similar to Twitter: a three-column design with side columns. However, Spotlight's concept is that the spotlight can fall on anyone.
Reflecting that idea, the content list uses cards throughout, so every post looks the same regardless of popularity or attention.
To avoid differences in appearance between posts with and without thumbnails, I set a display rule: posts with a thumbnail show only the image and title, and posts without one show the title and body text.
Since most article pages are read on smartphones, I removed the side columns and prioritized readability.
On a PC, on the other hand, the side columns create paths to sharing and related content.
The posting page, by contrast, is mostly used on a PC, so I left out decoration and extra elements to help writers focus on writing.
Spotlight has no “Like” button. Instead, it includes a few mechanisms that get the community moving naturally.
One is emoji reactions, like in Slack.
The Bitcoin community has many engineers, and I thought emoji reactions would suit them well. It makes for a place where people can respond a little more softly than with comments alone.
Bitcoin also has a culture of tipping.
To make tipping a bit more fun on Spotlight, I added an effect where a pizza illustration changes depending on the amount.
It's a little touch that anyone who knows the story of Bitcoin and pizza (Bitcoin Pizza Day) can enjoy with a smile.
To make reading less tiring, Spotlight supports dark mode. The contrast ratio between background and text is about 16:1. Because colors such as blue tend to look quite different from display to display, I chose colors carefully and built it on a black base.
With Spotlight, I aimed for a place where anyone can share and the light can fall on anyone, and designed everything consistently, from the overall structure down to the smallest interactions.
I approached it like designing a “place,” looking for the right point where culture and mechanism meet.
Logo↓
The logo is a spotlight motif based on an equilateral triangle.
A triangle can point up, down, left or right; for Spotlight, I chose right (▶).
It carries forward-looking meanings such as “play,” “go forward” and “the future.”
The light shining in at an angle represents not a fixed light, but one that can swivel to shine on many different people.
The color is based on a reassuring blue, with a gradient from yellow to light blue at the tip to hint at the service's forward-thinking nature.
The logotype also has a slightly distinctive shape so that it works on its own as text.
